The 16 UTEP athletic teams, part of the Division 1 program in Conference USA, are building pride while fortifying their national and international reputations.
Nine current and former Miner track and field athletes competed in the 2008 Summer Olympics, bringing home three bronze medals and something less tangible, albeit equally important—immeasurable pride.
On the football field, Head Coach Mike Price has guided the Miners to two bowl games, as well as a stunning defeat of the nationally ranked Houston Cougars during the 2009 regular season. Placekicker Jose Martinez made national headlines a year earlier when he nailed a 64-yard field goal, the second longest in NCAA history. A total of 13 Miners have been drafted by the NFL since 2000.
More than 40 years after winning the NCAA Men’s Division 1 title, the Miner basketball team remains the stuff of legend. The story of that team, which made history with five African-American starters in 1966, is retold in the 2006 movie Glory Road.
The women’s basketball team added its own chapter to the storied legacy in the 2007-08 season, capturing the regular season conference title and earning a spot in both national Top 25 polls as it won its first trip to the NCAA Tournament.
